Movie Review of the Journey to the Center of the Earth
Author: Lorraine Messina
This is definitely a kid’s movie. In fact most of the audience in the Theater were kids. The movie is a take off on Jules Verne’s novel of the same name.
Some of the photography in the movie was interesting such as scenic views of Iceland. I didn’t se the 3-D version of the movie but some of the action scenes would have been better represented in 3-D. It would have enhanced the movie experience.
“Journey” appeals to kids due to its predictability. It is a good adventure film for kids but I think adults will find that the film has few surprises. At one point the plot borrows from “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”.
I liked Brendon Fraser’s portrayal of his character, Trevor Anderson. Trevor was at times witty, not boring and some what lovable. Josh Hutcherson did a good job representing Sean, Trevor’s nephew. He was curious but not annoying. Anita Briem played, Hannah, a trail guide. This character I felt lacked depth. There wasn’t that much emotional impact to her actions. It was rather dry. Basically, Hannah makes a pretty trail guide but some wit, depth, and or quirks would have made the character a lot more interesting to watch and listen to.
If you like adventure flicks, take the kids to see Journey and try to go to the 3-D version if you can.
