Movie Review of the Dark Knight
Author: Lorraine Messina
“Holy Oscars Batman!” The Dark Knight is definitely not short on action or Oscar winning performances. It makes you literally pop out of your seat with fright and it is full of surprises you don’t suspect or anticipate.
The imagery of the movie is just stunning. I haven’t viewed the IMAX version of the movie but can say that the multiplex screen version has definite wow factor. Every scene is artistically done. What created this enriching experience are the scenes shot in IMAX. Filming in IMAX is definitely challenging. The IMAX cameras weigh over 60 pounds. It was no easy task lugging these monsters up to rooftops. I understand that the cameras have to be reloaded after three minutes of shooting. This must have required incredible patience on the part of the director and crew. The film is so engaging that you feel that you are more than just a spectator. Maybe one of Gotham City’s own residents enduring the chaos.
There has been a lot of press about Health Ledger’s role as the Joker. To me there is no question that Ledger provided an Oscar winning performance. Ledger performs the Joker’s voice with his own creative pitch, tone and cadence. Ledger even uniquely defines the Joker’s wit. There isn’t one time during the entire movie where Ledger seems out of character. His portrayal of the Joker is just criminal!
Every actor performs splendidly. I just loved Michael Cain’s, Alfred. Cain’s Alfred is so sophisticated and focused all of the time. You can feel the royalty and warmth of the character. Morgan Freeman’s, Lucius Fox, designs wonderful gadgets for Batman. It is reminiscent of “Q” in James Bond’s 007. Gary Oldman’s, Jim Gordan, is very exciting and not boring at all. Aaron Eckart’s, DA character, was very emotionally moving.
The “Dark Knight” definitely lives up to the hype and then some. It is definitely a must see!
